Despite rain, Kashmir highway through, Ladakh remains cut off | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 11 : Despite rain, the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through while the Ladakh region remained cut off. The historic Mughal and Bandipora-Gurez roads also remained closed though snow clearance operation is going on a war footing to put them through before schedule this time. Traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was plying from both sides despite rain since early this morning. It was raining on almost entire highway, including Banihal, Jawahar tunnel, Ramban, Ramsu, Penthal, Patnitop and Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, a traffic police official said. However, Meteorological department has warned rain and snow which could disrupt traffic on the highway during the next three days. Meanwhile, snow clearance operation has almost been completed on Zojila, most troubled part on the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir. The highway remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions following below freezing temperature. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has already announced that the highway would be put through for traffic about a month earlier this time because of less snowfall. However, it could get delayed if there is more snowfall or avalanches, the organisation said. |
