Udhampur-Baramulla railway line still a distant dream | 'Train to Kishtwar not feasible' | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 12: The expansion of railways in Jammu and Kashmir especially in Jammu region have so far very remote possibilities as no new rail line is feasible due to difficult terrain coupled with huge cost involved in the project. The Udhampur -Srinagar-Baramulla railway link was under construction for the last more than two decades and the scheduled date of completion was August 2007 but after nine years lapse of completion date, the new schedule date of completion has not been fixed. According to the recent updates on the railway line, the data revealed that Udhampur-Banihal new line is a part of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla new line with length of 272 km project which has been taken up at an anticipated cost of 19,565 Crores. The 136 kilometers long Banihal-Baramulla railway line and 25 kilometers Udhampur-Katra sections have already been commissioned and the construction on 111 kilometers long Katra-Banihal section has been taken up. Due to difficult terrain of young Himalayas, on which the project alignment passes through, it is not feasible to fix time lines for the project due to geological uncertainties, the Union Railway ministry has said recently. Moreover, there is no plan of Railway to connect the remotest district of Jammu province with railway route as the project connecting Kishtwar with railway link has already dropped due to huge cost involved. According to the proposed plan, survey for 224 kilometers Udhampur-Doda-Premnagar-Badherwah and Doda-Kishtwar new line was completed in 2011-12 and the cost of the project was assessed to the tune of Rs. 12,040 Crore (at 2012 price level) with a negative rate of return of 5.34%. |
