Will she, won't she? Mehbooba keeps everyone guessing on Govt formation | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 12: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti is keeping everybody including her own party men guessing with regard to government formation in the state. On the other hand the former ministers of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are just waiting for a nod from the PDP President so that they can become 'king makers' once again. The ball with regard to government formation is in the court of Mehbooba and everybody is watching the developments very keenly. Sources told Early Times that the central leadership of BJP has asked the PDP President to take oath as the next chief minister of the state at the earliest. The BJP leaders have made it clear that once the government is formed then some of the confidence building measures (CBMs) would be taken as has been demanded by Mehbooba. "BJP does not want further delay in the government formation since it has sent disturbing signals among the masses in state particularly Jammu region. The party leaders both at the centre as well as in state fully know that this is their best chance to prove their worth. The BJP leaders want to do something for the people of Jammu since they got a huge mandate from them," said sources. Sources said that state unit of BJP has been kept out of the process taken up with regard to government formation. The party's leadership at the centre is holding parleys with PDP with respect to formation of government in the state. However, it remains to be seen how much time it would take for the two parties to break the ice and form the government. "Both the PDP and BJP leaders know it fully well that they are in a tricky position with regard to formation or otherwise of the government. If these parties fail to reach any consensus in forming the government there are chances that they might suffer heavily in the next Assembly elections as and when they are held," said sources. Sources said that majority of the leaders of both PDP and BJP are in favour of re-stitching the coalition government so that they can 'achieve' something and sell the same in run up to the next Assembly elections in the state. However, these leaders want some face saving so that they can form a ground for starting the second round of their coalition government in the state. It would be in place to mention here that Jammu & Kashmir is without a popular government since January 7 following the demise of then chief minister and PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Although, many of the PDP leaders tried to persuade Mehbooba to don the mantle of chief minister after the death of her father she refused to take oath. This is despite the fact that she would have become the first woman chief minister of the state. Following the stalemate Governor's Rule was imposed in the state on January 8. |
