Flood scare back in Kashmir | Jhelum dredging incomplete, people recall 2014 deluge | | Early Times Report srinagar, Mar 12: The failure of the State Government to carry out dredging of river Jhelum and other rivers flowing through Kashmir has once again created flood scare across the Valley. The incessant rains lashing different parts of Jammu and Kashmir have created panic across the State as people fear that floods are once again knocking at their doors. Jhelum dredging got caught in the official wrangles and proved to be a non-starter. However, after the Governor N N Vohra took over the reins of the State he pulled up the concerned officials and asked them to start the dredging of the river Jhelum at war footing basis but till now not much has been done as the dredging work started recently. On Saturday many people were sitting at the Jhelum banks and were praying that rains should stop. " Had Government paid some attention towards the causes which led to entire Kashmir getting submerged in September 2014 situation could have been better today. We have kept our fingers crossed and are hoping that Jhelum flows without breaching its embankments," said a local Parvaiz Ahmed. Recollecting the 2014 deadly deluge, Ahmed, a resident of Jawahar Nagar said, "Our house remained submerged in water for more than a month and we lost all our house hold items. During the past one year we have somehow managed to get our house repaired but the flood threat looming again has terrified us." Weatherman has assured that weather would improve from Monday onwards and people should not worry but their bitter experience has pressed a panic button across Kashmir. "We cannot understand why Government failed to carry out the dredging of the river Jhelum during the dry season. Not much has been done during the past two years to save Srinagar and its adjoining areas from the flood threat. BJP-PDP regime during its 10-month tenure kept on harping that Centre has not released enough funds and dredging work cannot be undertaken. Even the breaches which were caused during 2014 floods are yet to be repaired," said Farooq Khan of Gonikan area. A top official of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department while talking to Early Times said, "We have put entire official machinery on the alert and all the measures are being taken to meet with any possible eventuality." On being told that March month always remains wet and there is nothing unnatural about rains lashing the State in this month, the official said, "We don't want to take any chances. We know it very well that still lot of work has to be done to ensure that no breaches take place along Jhelum," he added. Asked about the dredging process, he said, "Dredging work is incomplete and it cannot be undertaken till water levels recede." |
