Army rescues 73 people in Kupwara, continuous rainfall lead to land slides

KUPWARA, Mar 12: Army's Rashtriya Rifles today rescued 73 civilians who were stranded on Tangdhar- Nastachun road here in this border district of North Kashmir. Meanwhile, due to continuous rainfall landslides occurred in the Uri area of Baramulla district, after which four families were shifted to safer places.
A top police official told early times that army detachment based at Nastachhun received information about stranded vehicles full of passengers including women, children, aged persons and an ambulance with critically ill heart patient.
"Due to heavy rains the avalanche hit the Tangdhar area due to which roads were blocked at various places on the intervening night of March 11-12. Army launched a swift rescue operation in higher reaches immediately and swung into action despite harsh weather conditions, snow blizzard and zero visibility and saved precious human lives in time," the official said.
The rescue team of local Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit rescued 73 civilians including women, children and a critically ill heart patient and gave medical aid and provided safe passage to them, the official said. He said the timely and prompt assistance provided by Army not only rescued the civilians, but also ensured that they reach to their destinations safely.
Meanwhile, due to the continuous rainfall in Kashmir valley from past two days landslides got triggered in many areas of Baramulla district.
Reports said that continuous rainfall caused landslides in Uri area of Baramulla district which created panic among the masses. Due to land slide four families of Gowhalan area were shifted to safer places, where as there are also reports of land slide from some other parts of Uri area.
"During rainy season land slide occurs at many places of Uri town including Gowhalan, Churunda, Garkote, Salamabad and other villages too. Under PMGSY a road is being constructed in our area. The continuous rainfall caused landslides in already loose soil because of continuous cutting by machines, said Nazir Ahmad, a local of Gowhalan. The road leading to Garkote from Uri has been closed due to heavy landslides and due to continuous rainfall electricity has been cut off in Salalmabad grid station, affecting at least fifteen villages of Uri town.
