Oppose giving him cabinet berth | PDP workers sharpen knives against Akhtar | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 29 : There could be difference of opinion in the PDP over various issues confronting the party at present but one thing the PDP seems to have been united and that is to pitch against Naeem Akhtar's induction in Mehbooba's cabinet. Sources told Early Times during various meetings held recently over the formation of the new government in Jammu and Kashmir, the PDP leaders voiced their concern over Akhtar's induction- stating in unison that his record in the past has proved detrimental for the overall party's growth. The party workers and the legislators have, as per sources, informed Mehbooba, that the disgruntlement within the party touched new heights as Akhtar always would give cold shoulder to the pleas made to him by the activists. During the meetings, the legislators of the PDP have stated that when Akhtar was holding the education portfolio in the cabinet of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the former would never ever gave a single hearing to the pleas made to him by the party workers. Further the decisions taken by Akhtar as the education minister brought several brickbats for the government. "There are teachers who are cursing the PDP regime. The protests against the government became order of the day and it was all due to the wrong policies of Akhtar. He would listen to none and is not even a politician who would listen to the woes of his workers and activists," said a party worker. The leaders and the general workers have been cautioning the party over the repercussions of according any ministerial berth to Naeem Akhtar. They have been repeatedly saying that Akhtar has neither won a single election nor he has contested any. "He has no position even to contest an election. He has no support of the workers- how could he even think to keep them in loop," says another PDP activist, adding that during the discussions with the PDP chief, the issue has been at threadbare discussed and deliberated. In January, Akhtar hinted at possibly being undermined during the days to come stated that in Mufti's demise he lost his constituency. Considered as a confidant of late chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed Akther after Mufti's demise made a candid admission that 'he has lost his constituency in the sudden death of Mufti Muhammad Sayeed'. Speaking at the Rasm-e-chahrum of the late Chief Minister Naeeem Akhtar said Mufti was his constituency. "I have no constituency now. I have lost it with the demise of Mufti Sahab," he said. Meanwhile, there are reports that Akhtar could possibly be given the responsibility to take charge of the media cell and would retain his position as PDP's chief spokesman. It is yet to be seen whether during the days to come, Mufti's trusted lieutenant would be given the vital post or the views of the party workers would matter more for the chief minister in the making. |
