Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 29 : Seizure of 1769 scants of timber has brought Police and forest department at the loggerheads with both departments holding independent inquiries and blaming each other for their mysterious disappearance in Mahore.
The documents in possession of Early Times revealed that in year 2014, the Mohore police seized 1769 scants of timber, one Tipper and Saw-Mil under section 85/2014. SDPO Mohore appeared before the Court of Authorised Officer under sections 26 of J&K forest act for initiating of confiscation proceedings but the seized stuff has not been physically handed over to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Mahore to Court of Authorised Officer so far.
"According to Forest rules, if police seizes any stuff related to forest department, same should be informed to forest department within 24 hours but unfortunately the case was handed over to forest department after 8 to 9 months which has been delayed further proceeding of the case and misplaced the seized Scants from the spots," Sources stated adding that after getting the case, concerned DFO had written letters to SDPO to handover seized stuff as well as asked to appear in the Court but the SDPO failed to appear personally and neither handedover the seized stuff to Forest department.
"Earlier, after seizing 1769 scants of timber, the SDPO Mahore approached a truck owner to provide truck for transporting the sleepers from Budhan to Jammu and the SDPO failed to get the permission from the forest department to truck owner, but when the truck owner refused to load the timber without proper permission, he was threatened by the SDPO.
Official of the forest department, wishing anonymity stated that thereafter the said officer managed his own departmental vehicle to transit the timber, the vehicle was seized by the DFO concerned. "The SDPO also harassed some people of the area by misusing his position "they alleged.
However, the SDPO Mohore, Ayaz Ahmed Sheikh denied allegations leveled by forest department against him and said the officials of the forest department were involved in various cases of wrong doings and cases have been running against them. "So that, they are misleading government and others, "he alleged and added that scants were seized by then SHO Mahore and handed over to care takers and also registered case in this regard.
