Tackling energy crisis to be Mehbooba's Waterloo | Jammu wants lion's share in electricity | Mahadeep Singh Jamwal | 3/30/2016 12:16:31 AM |
| Early Times Report
Jammu,Mar 29 : As the state is likely to witness severe power crisis in the coming weeks it has become imperative for Mehbooba led Government to intensify measures that could ease the discomfort of people. Official sources said that majority of people in the region of Jammu may face a lot of inconvenience owing to prolonged outs and that too during the severe summer months. Those belonging to the Panthers Party, the Shiva sena and the BJP want the Government, rather the Power development Department to divert additional power to the region of Jammu so that people were not faced with severe difficulties. Official sources said that Jammu and Kashmir state required 2,500 MW to meet energy requirements. The state purchases power from the Northern Grid and other resources to meet its power demand. At least eight small power projects being run by the JKSPDC with an aggregate generation capacity of around 35 MW have been shut due to low discharge. Generation has been affected by scanty rain and snowfall in the upper reaches of the state. The power authorities have been running only two of the six turbines of 150-MW capacity each of BHEP-I and BHEP-II due to low discharge of water.Other turbines will be made operational only after snow starts melting, which will increase the water level in the river. The day-to-day power generation depended on the availability of water. The estimated hydro power potential of the state is 20,000 MW, of which 16,480 MW has been identified. Of the identified potential, only 2,458 MW (about 15 per cent) had been exploited. It is here that the responsibility of Mehbooba would be to enhance the power potential on one hand and seek central Government help for releasing additional funds which could help the state in purchasing electricity from Northern grid and other states. Hence delay on the part of Mehbooba Mufti to take over as Chief Minister would be a waste of time. The early she starts her work as Chief Minister it would prove better for her Government as each st ep would be monitored by people which alone could help the PDP and the BJP to strengthen their vote bank. |
