Agitated over water scarcity, locals stage protest | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Mar.29: A large number of people today staged protest to register resentment against snapped water supply for long and affected life in the village Khilochak Tehsil Hiranagar. The protestors led by Khem Raj, an eminent citizen of locality amid slogans against PHE Department alleged that they have been deprived of water supply for long but authorities concerned are yet to redress their issue. While addressing protesters, Manisha Rani, a house wife, said that the water supply has been snapped for past many days and despite several deputations which raised the issue with officials of PHE Department nothing concrete was done by the department. She said scarcity of water supply has put life on halt in the village as they (villagers) have to go to traditional water resources to fetch water for domestic use and for their cattle as well. Chuni Lal (Retd) Principal said there were limited houses when PHE provided connections but when the population increased in the village, PHE department did not enhance the water supply system. He said an estimate for development project has been prepared and proceed to DDC Kathua, the file is biting dust in office. He said if they (locals) can pay Rs 1000/- for water tank from private sources, they can pay water supply also so government should provide sufficient water supply in the village to mitigate the local demand. While interacting to media, Khem Chand said that the villagers have highlighted the demand for water connections before MP, MLA Hiranagar, DDC and XEn PHE but their demands yet have not been conceded to. He also added although DDC has instructed to review the existing situation but the results still are awaited. He said the dilly dallying and callous approach from department has left villagers fuming who took to the roads today. The protesters have appealed to Government and even to future coalition government to restore water supply to give respite to the people who have been suffering due to shortage of drinking water supply for months. |
