Anantnag, Mar 31: Officials of the Handicrafts department have come under sharp criticism for disrespecting the women during an awareness program organized by the former last week in Mattan area of Anantnag district.
A photograph showing employees sitting on chairs and female artisans on floor in awareness camp organized is irking netizens and activists who are working hard to revive the handicrafts industry in the state.
The photograph has gone viral on social networking sites including Facebook and anger is brewing against the department for disrespecting the female artisans. Many netizens have questioned the integrity of the organizers and officers of the Handicrafts department, which has spent Rupees 30 thousands on the awareness camp.
"If the event was exclusively for artisans weren't provided chairs to female artisans, "Amir Shah, a Facebook user wrote on the photograph shared by another user.
Number of Facebook users demanded stern action against the Handicrafts department Officials for disrespecting the female artisans.
"Shame for organizers ladies seated on floor," Showket Ahmad, another user wrote.
First row of the chairs was occupied by the employees of the department while as around eight female artisans sitting on floor in front of the senior officials who attended the program, shows the photograph.
Early Times has also learnt from the sources that the department has spent less money on artisans and has allegedly embezzled the amount meant for the program.
Bashir Ahmad, District Handicrafts officer, claims four hundred artisans attended the program, however photographs evidently negates him claims.
"Town Hall was full; hundred artisans attended the program. We asked Municipal committee officials to provide more chairs they couldn't," he said.
Ahmad denied that employees of the department had occupied the chairs.
When asked about the budget and expenditure of the program, he handed over his phone to cashier Sartaj Ahmad, who revealed that artisans were provided refreshment of rupees 20 during the program.
He attributed expenditure of rupees three thousand to media including Doordarshan Srinagar.
