Battle for portfolios: PDP holds ground firmly | What will BJP do now? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 31: The cornered and under pressure BJP, which had been pitching for equal number of berths in the Cabinet and Council of Ministers and equal number of portfolios for many days now, on Wednesday put on record their demands. It was the BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi who spoke for the party, explained the party stand. He gave everyone to understand that the BJP and the PDP had equal number of MLAs and the BJP will not accept the status of B-team. At the same time, he stated that the local party leadership had conveyed the party's view to the high command and the high command will take final decision. MLA from Nowshera Ravinder Sharma also spoke on the issue and made identical statements. In fact, he only restated his position on the issue. As was expected, the PDP leadership reacted later in the evening that told the BJP that both the parties will hold the same portfolios and have the same representation as they had during the time of Mufti Sayeed. As a matter of fact, the PDP leader who was authorized by the party president Mehbooba Mufti to speak on the issue said that PDP-BJP alliance was not new one and that it was stitched on February 27, 2015 after two-month-long tortuous negotiations. To be more precise, the PDP leader on Wednesday said what Mehbooba Mufti had told reporters in Jammu on March 26, the day she, along with BJP's Leader of Legislature Party Nirmal Singh, met with State Governor NN Vohra that "what was with us during the Mufti time will remain with us and what was with the BJP will remain with them" and that there was dispute between the two parties as far as allocation of portfolios and representation of the PDP and the BJP in the Council of Ministers was concerned. What will the BJP do now? The PDP, as per sources in the party, will not concede any of the new demands as put forth by the BJP. The PDP is not the BJP, which dilutes its stated position or compromise. The PDP has never compromised its stand and there are reasons to believe that it will not do so in the future. The PDP knows that if it concedes any of the BJP's new demands, it will not go down well with its Kashmir constituency. Besides, the PDP is face to face with the NC, which has already been fishing in the troubled waters ever since the demise of Mufti Sayeed. The problem of the BJP is also similar. In Jammu, it is the Congress and the Panthers Party which have been tearing into the BJP and charging it with ditching the people of Jammu region and throwing into the dustbin its agenda and ideology. All in all, it can be said that both the parties have hardened their stand and it is this that could cause more delay in the Government formation. |
