Cinema, Multiplex owners seek continuation of SRO-122 | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 31 : At a time when jewelers all across the country are continuing their shutdown against excise tax imposed on them, Cinema & Multiplex owners have made a representation to the Governor N N Vohra, urging continuation of SRO-122 for exemption of entertainment tax for a further period of 10 years. In a representation, to the Governor, the J&K cinema & Multiplex Association, has rued imposition of entertainment tax @ 50%. Rajan Gupta, president of the J&K cinema and multiplex association said that imposition of such a tax would be a huge burden on the average cinema goers. "Cine goers shall have to bear this huge burden and it shall be detrimental for the trade" said Rajesh Gupta while talking to ET. "The association has pushed for tax free cinema tickets as the neighboring state like Punjab" Gupta added. In support of their case, the association has while highlighting their grievances have pleaded the difficulties faced by their trade which have made the business unsustainable. "A further imposition of such colossal tax will lead to closure of cinemas" Gupta averred seeking revocation of the tax. Already deprived of varied sources of entertainment, people in Jammu depend mostly on movies to recoup themselves, but rates of movie tickets have increased immensely in the last couple of years. "Movie tickets have become increasingly expensive and are out of the reach of majority of people. Any more taxes would make them completely unaffordable for most people" said Ganesh, an employee of a city Cineplex. It is pertinent to mention here that many cinemas in the state of J&K have already closed down due to lack of incentive & encouragement from the Govt. and those which are somehow keeping themselves afloat have to run shows to empty halls. |
