Sand mafia in league with I&FC officials destroying Doodh Ganga | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 31 : The sand from famous Doodh Ganga River is turning out to be no less than gold. There is a veritable 'sand-rush in this river' and those who have been able to plunder have become millionaires overnight. Locals of nearby areas of Doodh Ganga said that well organized mafia under the patronage of the higher officials of the Flood control department are hard at work excavating mostly illegal sand from this famous river and whosoever comes in their way is brought to harm - sometime with fatal consequences. Local allege that illegal extraction of sand from Doodh Ganga near Gopalpora Chadora has been going on for the last 6 months, and though they have complained to a number of authorities about it, no action has been taken. "Authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to rampant sand mining near the Gopalpora belt at Budgam District. Sand is being extracted in huge quantities every day, destroying the river in the process. Despite having made several complaints, officials have not acted on it," Basharat Ahmad of Gopalpora said. Locals blame that authorities of the flood control department including the Executive engineer Narbal are hand in glove in removing illegal sand from this river. They also said that though they approached the DC Budgam and the concerned police station many times, about the destruction of river and illegal sand mining but till date, no action has been taken. When this ET correspondent visited the spot, he found that sand was being scooped out near the Gopalpora with machines. "Trucks are being loaded in the night with the extracted sand,'" the locals allege. A local resident from the area, requesting anonymity, told this newspaper that the authorities are aware of what is happening. "All the concerned authorities are well aware of the illegal sand mining, but they have kept mum because they are also involved in the entire chain. There is also political support for it, without which such activity cannot commence," alleged the local resident.
