Let politicians avoid stoking fire in NIT,Srinagar | | | Agreed that law and order is a state subject but a politician of the stature of Omar Abdullah, who has headed a coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir for six years, should have not criticized the central Government's handling of the tense situation in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar where a tiff between local and non-local students took an ugly turn over the results of a cricket tie between India and West Indies.First of all Omar should have looked into the matter as a true politician and not as a Kashmir centric political leader. Were the local students justified in celebrating India's defeat at the hands of West Indies ? Yes one could have argued that local students could have taken the liberty of voicing joy had India been defeated by Pakistan in the series as that has been a normal development in the Kashmir valley during the last about 30 years or so If the Government or the police claim that the non-local students of the NIT took out a protest rally and were about to march out of the campus and when they were stopped they pelted stones on the police. If it is a fact what was the need for the non-local students to hold demonstration? It indicates some of them were roughed up and . took out a protest rally simply to give vent to their anger. This development certainly calls for deployment of paramilitary forces because in that case even the non-local students could expect fair treatment. However,Omar has criticized the Centre's dealing in regard with the ongoing unrest at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar., Omar Abdullah has described the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployment in the institution as 'abnormal', asserting that the situation called for "tact not force".Omar took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and expressed dismay over the presence of CRPF in NIT campus. "TWO companies of CRPF in a campus is not normal by any stretch of imagination. Requires tact not use of force," tweeted Omar.In this case Omar is right because the sizzling tempers call for tact and not force.Well if two companies of CRPF have been deployed they are there to maintain law and order and not punish one side or the other.Already the state has an elected Government it is upto the coalition Government, led by Mehbooba to decide whether there was need for retaining two companies of CRPF or withdrawing it. Unrest was witnessed again at NIT campus on Tuesday evening after the scene of clash which took place last week, with outstation students assaulting police and officers.Tension simmered in the NIT after India lost the World T20 semi-final to the West Indies last week After frantic calls were made to the HRD ministry and the Union Home Ministry by the parents of non-local students a two-member team of the Ministry of Human Resource Development visited the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar,on Wednesday where unrest flared again last evening after non local students assaulted police and officers and pelted stones.Meanwhile, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been deployed at the campus. This means that the non-locals have no faith in the impartiality of the state police.Had they some faith in the police whey should they have attacked them with stones ?The NIT was closed by the authorities on March 31 following a row during the India-West Indies World T20 cricket match. The institute resumed normal functioning couple of days earlier. It is better for Omar Abdullah not to incite local students for the sake of strengthening the NC's vote bank.Let him fulfill his sermon by allowing the authorities to sort out the issues tactfully. The only alternative is to promote understanding between the local and non-local students. If there is any mistrust or suspicion it should be removed and let the Government initiate measures for bringing about peace on the campus. |
