Minister's undue interference worsens situation | | | Hyder Ali Early Times Report srinagar, Apr 7: Even as the ongoing row at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here has snowballed into a major controversy, a Minister in the State Cabinet is being accused of having worsened the crisis through his undue interference on how the matter needs to be tackled. Highly placed sources said the Minister unduly poked his nose in the matters beyond his domain as a result of which the administration failed to tackle the crises. A special team from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, which arrived here on April 6, is understood to be looking into this "crucial" aspect of the case. Even though the Home Ministry is held by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti herself, sources said this Minister misused his position and directed some of the top officials on "how to tackle the situation" as a result of which things went out of the hands. It is understood that this Minister from the Peoples Democratic Party, asked top officials in civil and police administration, including his relative, to be in constant touch with him and that the decisions "on maintenance of law and order" be taken only after his nod. Sources said the Minister was in constant touch with the police top brass on phone from Jammu since Tuesday when controversy again stuck the engineering college campus at Hazratbal. And, by the time he flew to Srinagar on April 6, situation had gone so messy that police could do little to control it. And, the worst thing is that the Minister declines to "refrain from the misadventures". "He is still calling the shots everywhere," said an official in the civil administration asking not to be identified. But it's not for the first time that this Minister has been poking his nose into other Ministry affairs particularly Home. Sources said last year in the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed-led Government, he would equally interfere over policing in Kashmir by trying to pretend that he was "kingmaker of the police and civil top brass in Valley." As the popular anecdote goes among the police officials, this Minister, during his first innings was calling the shots in the matters of policing though he was never assigned the Home portfolio. "There were occasions when our bosses had to seek his consent even on how to deal with roadside protests against poor power supply," ridiculed a police official asking not to be named. This Minister was allegedly aspiring to be Home Minister in the second-innings of the PDP-BJP Government but the allegations leveled against by his own party colleague and Member Parliament Tariq Hameed Karra are understood to have shattered his dreams. Insiders said he was still trying to do everything "out of box" only to prove before the Central and the State Governments that he was the best bet for the chair of Home Minister. "But actually his hit and trial has always back lashed. He remained a failure to run his own Ministry as majority of employees of his department often took to streets spending more time in protests than in office," said an official. Otherwise also, if reports are to be believed this man enjoys little or no support of the PDP grassroots, who have often been up in arms against his alleged-misadventures. Despite repeated attempts the Minister could not be reached. |
