Early Times Report

Anantnag, Apr 7: From restoring the defunct public toilets to banning washing of vehicles on Lidder river banks, Municipal Committee, Pahalgam, (MCP) finally decided to treat the garbage dumped at Sarbal on fast track basis.
MCP Executive Officer (EO) Tariq Ahmad Itoo, who recently joined the civic body, told Early Times that garbage dumped near Tulyan Nullah in Sarbal area of Pahalgam would be treated with the latest technology, subject to weather conditions.
"I have recently took over as MCP EO and during this short period of time, I have tried my best to ensure cleanliness in the Pahalgam valley. However, due to bad weather conditions, I couldn't do much," he said.
"Treating the dumped garbage and removing segregated material from the dumping site is now our first priority," he added.
He said Pahalgam Development Authority had already submitted a proposal in this regard under Solid Waste Management and hopefully a scientific line would be adopted for treating the waste in the area.
The EO informed that the development authority had already put up a segregating unit at the dumping site and once weather conditions improved, work for treating the garbage would be restored.
Pertinent to mention here that Early Times had reported that Forest department had asked MCP to remove the garbage within stipulated time.
Earlier, taking cognizance of media reports, MCP had restored seven among 14 defunct public toilets in the area while repair works on remaining seven was going on.
The defunct toilets here had been causing inconvenience to tourists and people associated with tourism. The EO informed that they were planning to construct more toilet blocks at Bairsan, Bustand Laripora and some other spots.
He informed that they had approved 314 cases under individual House Hold Latrine (IHHL) scheme.
Besides intensifying cleanliness drive, the civic body on the directions of CEO of Pahalgam Development Authority, Reyaz Ahmad Wani had banned washing of vehicles on river Lidder banks in the area.
