Banihal, Apr 7: Instead of taking legal action against them, traffic police cops can be often seen exchanging pleasantries with the violators of traffic rules on the Batote-Jawahar Tunnel stretch of the national highway. The cops are not only lenient towards the vehicle operators, who indulge in the worst kind of violations of traffic rules, but they also don't punish those who ply vehicles in violation of their policy of 'up and down' traffic on alternate days. "Due to their poor traffic management, a mess is often seen daily on the Batote-Jawahar Tunnel NH stretch, causing problems to people," official sources said. "The dilapidated condition of the highway further adds to the problems of the people," the sources added. While traffic jams were a routine affair on the road from Batote to Jawahar Tunnel, traffic cops were often seen exchanging pleasantries with the violators, instead of booking them under law, sources regretted. "If traffic police show a little will, drive on the highway can be a hassle free one," sources said, adding that if traffic cops "perform their duty with honesty, the number of road accidents on the highway can be brought down to a large extent". |
