Jammu, Apr 7: Parents and family members hailing from Kund in Mahore area today have alleged that denial of ambulance to them by Block Medical Officer (BMO) Mahore claimed life of newly born baby when they failed to pay him Rs 8500/-.
Local reports said that Showkat Ali husband of 22 year -old Saleema has alleged that his wife developed labor pain and bleeding on April 2 following which they shifted her to Primary Health Centre (PHC) Mahore for treatment. Accusing BMO Mahore of not providing them ambulance, he further said that doctors at PHC Mahore referred his wife to SMGS Hospital Jammu Reasi but the concerned BMO denied them of providing ambulance service.
"The BMO demanded Rs 8500 from us for ambulance service", said Showkat Ali who is working as labourer in Bakshi Nagar area adding that they are poor and they hire service of a sumo for Rs 6500 and reached SMGS hospital at 2.30 am.
He further alleged that same night his wife delivered a male baby. The doctors treating her kept the new born in NICU Ward as the baby developed some complications due to some problems developed by the prolonged sitting of expecting mother.
"Later, after four days the baby breathed his last, he lamented while adding, "Had the BMO Mahore provided ambulance to them in time, the child would have been saved."
Showkat further alleged that this is not a single case when ambulance was denied to the needy patient and he also used to deny the treatment there are so many cases. He also alleged that there is a specific medical shop outside the hospital who had developed a nexus with hospital authorities and the poor attendants of patients are forced to purchase medicine from the said shop reasons better known to concerned.
When Early Times contacted BMO Mahore Ashraf Kohli he stated that there are two ambulances in the hospital but only one driver but he was on leave and so he failed to provide them ambulance.
Director Health Services DR BS Pathania when contacted rejected the claims of the BMO outrightly and said if any driver goes on leave then the concerned BMO and CMO have to arrange driver and they have been authorized to do so.
