GoI further dents JK's tourism: no project approved for 2015-16 | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 5: Call it failure of the PDP-BJP coalition government or indifference of the union government, no new tourism project has been approved for the state of Jammu Kashmir in 2015-16. The development comes amid sanctioning of scores of projects worth Rs 1700 crore in other states. The Union MoS Tourism Mahesh Sharma informed the Raja Sabha the other day that 24 projects worth Rs 1719.11 crore were approved. This , according to him, marks a jump of 60% from the previous year (2014-15). The MoS could not have chosen a better day for revealing this vital information. The Chief Minister, Mahbooba Mufti had asked for 'robust growth' in tourism, calling it the "mainstay" of the local economy. She has the tourism portfolio. Pertinently the state government had declared 2015, as 'Visit Jammu and Kashmir Year'. The tourism sector which was already in shambles will receive a serious jolt by the announcement of the MoS tourism in the Raja Sabha. During 2015-16, Assam got the maximum amount of 129.65 crore for two projects. It is followed by Uttarakhand with 115.50 crore for a couple of projects. Rajasthan was lucky to get 104.40 crore while in Chhattisgarh and Tripura, one project each was sanctioned for Rs 99.94 crore and Rs 99.59 crore respectively. Apart from these, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh got 99.22 crore of one project each in both the states, while Sikkim was sanctioned Rs 98.05 crore for a project. |
