PDP leaders fight it out in open | Selection of IUST VC | | Javaid Naikoo ET Report Srinagar, May 5: Favouritism has stopped selection of Vice-Chancellor for Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora. Highly placed sources told Early times that some PDP leaders including a minister in the Cabinet, instead of following the recommendations of selection committee framed by former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed are hell bent on appointing their close associate for the post. Sources said that Mufti during his tenure as the CM and Chancellor of the University before his death had appointed Professor Amitabh Mattu as chairman of three member selection committee with former Vice Chancellor of Kashmir university, Professor Jalees Tareen and Professor Qazi, presently Vice Chancellor of Hamdard University, Delhi, to recommend a qualified person to head IUST. They said that 42 applied for the post, and selection committee had shortlisted 10 applicants. However after the death of Mufti the process of selection halted and nobody was selected to replace incumbent VC Abdul Rasheed Trag. Sources disclosed that now when selection committee has to take a final call one lobby of PDP leadership is projecting Professor Afifa Kamili of SKUAST, who did not figure among the shortlisted, for the post. "Only a week back Kamili was included in the list and was called for interaction scheduled on May 10, and I must tell you that her ill-timed and unscheduled inclusion in the list has raised many questions on PDP leadership," a source said. Another lobby is busy projecting the nephew of a minister who though figures in the shortlisted list is nearly 65-year-old and technically ineligible. Keeping in view challenges pertaining at IUST, sources said that faculty and students alike are looking for deserving and efficient candidate with national and international exposure to take IUST to new heights. |
