Early Times Report
BANIHAL, May 08: On Mother's Day, which is a worldwide celebration of mothers, motherhood and the influence that mothers make to the lives of their children, tragedy struck on the national highway near Shaitani Nullah here in the wee hours of this morning after a Tavera fell into a deep gorge, leaving a young mom and her 1-year-old son dead.
The incident took place at about 5 am after the ill-fated Tavera (JK14B/4248), which was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar, skidded off the highway and fell into a deep gorge near Shaitani Nullah, about 15 km from here towards Jammu.
The dead were identified as Nisha Rani, wife of Ajay Kumar of Kunjwani, Jammu, and her 1-year-old son Kartik Singh.
Quoting eyewitnesses, sources said even in her death, the woman had held her dead son tightly to her chest. It seemed as if she had made a last attempt to save her son from the impact of the fall, but the destiny had something else in store for them as the duo died in the incident, sources felt.
While the woman-son died, nine others, who were travelling in the cab, survived with injuries. They included driver Ajay Kumar, son of Ram Dutta of Kunjwani, Rakesh Kumar, son of Satpal of Pathankot, Ramandeep, son of Satpal, Jasvinder Singh, son of Maan Singh of Sangroor, Punjab, Tirath Bandhan, Laxmi, wife of Vikram Singh, Manisha, daughter of Vikram Singh, Sukesh Sharma, son of Billawar Singh of Bantalab, Jammu, and Vikram, son of Gopal of Nepal. All of them were admitted to Emergency Hospital, Banihal.
Sources said the rescue operation was carried out by police and army with the help of locals. Block Medical Officer, Banihal, Mohammad Yousaf said while eight of the injured were discharged after first-aid, one was referred to other hospital.
The cause of incident was yet to be ascertained. After performing legal formalities, police handed over the bodies of Nisha and her son to their family members for last rites.
A case in this connection was registered at the concerned police station.
