SRINAGAR, May 8: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asked the BJP government at the Centre to fulfill the 'commitments' it had made to her late father and former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Addressing a gathering, after jointly inaugurating the first-ever National Khadi Exhibition with Union Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSME) Minister, Kalraj Mishra, here, Mehbooba said the decision of PDPto align with BJP for government formation in the state was full of challenges.
"The PDP stands by its commitment of ensuring equitable development across the state. However, we would need the support of the central government in this regard. It is imperative that you keep your promise and fulfill the commitments made with Mufti Sahib," said Mehbooba while looking towards the union minister.
She said that if the state and central governments fail to address the genuine issues of the people of Jammu & Kashmir then they are bound to face the music in the future. She said that people are ready to extend their hand to the government once they feel that is taking pro-people initiatives. She added that people can raise revolt once they feel that they are being ditched by the people at helm.
Referring to the fractured mandate of 2014 elections, Mehbooba said she chose to follow in the footsteps of her father, who had chosen the toughest option of aligning with BJP, which alone guarantees a representative government that respects the wishes and aspirations of people in all the three regions of the state and could revive the peace process in the region.
The chief minister took a dig at the youth who take to stone pelting especially after the Friday prayers in some of the areas of downtown Srinagar. She said the people especially senior citizens fear in going to Jamia Masjid for offering the Friday sensing trouble due to the stone pelting that takes place after the congregational Friday prayers.
"Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had asked the people to apply perfume and put on neat clothes while they head towards the Masjid for offering the Friday prayers. But I am pained to see the stone pelting incidents after the Friday prayers. The stone pelting defeats the basic purpose of Friday and Friday prayers. The people more so the youth should desist from same and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)," said Mehbooba.
The chief minister highlighted the 'predicament' of the people of Jammu & Kashmir, who, she said become the first casualty of any hostile environment between India and Pakistan. She said only sustained peace in the region can allow her government to resuscitate the state's financial health by reviving core sectors of economy, including small scale industries.
Seeking Centre's support in promotion of famed handicrafts of the state, Mehbooba vouched for cluster approach for which, she said detailed discussions have been held with the Union Minister. She urged Mishra to pay special attention towards this sector, which has a huge export market overseas.
Referring to the huge potential of micro, small and medium enterprises in employment generation, the chief minister sought greater financial support and technical knowhow from the centre in revitalizing the state's industrial sector.
The MSME minister, in his address, said the khadi exhibition will help young industrialists to find buyers for their products. He said the union government will extend all possible help to the young entrepreneurs in the state and also referred to his meeting with the chief minister in which issues of skill development and promotion of MSME sector were discussed in detail.
After inaugurating the exhibition, the chief minister, along with the union minister, went around the stalls and interacted with the entrepreneurs, particularly inquiring about the marketing and institutional support extended to them. She also appreciated the quality of products on display, ranging from hand-woven items to sports goods.
During the month-long exhibition, more than 200 stalls of genuine khadi and village products from Jammu & Kashmir and outside will be on show where people can buy wide array of products on affordable rates.
