Mehbooba to make debut at Srinagar Sect today | | | Hyder Ali
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 8: Even as Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti is all set to make her debut at the Civil Secretariat here on Monday, the reopening of Durbar offices in the summer capital, the event is likely to be mired by controversies. While Mehbooba, who has never been a Minister before, will start her office with guard of honour, her adversaries have trained guns on the first woman Chief Minister of the state. Highly placed sources said the opposition National Conference (NC) plans to hold roadside protests "against the double standards of the government" while some in the separatist camp have similar plans. Sources said the security has been beefed up manifold to avoid any roadside protests, which could put the government in tight-spot. As if the separatist resentment against proposed establishment of Sainik Colony in Srinagar was not enough, the National Conference has joined chorus to keep the "anti-India pot boiling". While the NC has snowballed the development of Sainik Colony into a major controversy worth "full-fledged agitation" against the ruling PDP-BJP alliance, sources said in the coming days, the opposition would stage roadside protests right outside the Civil Secretariat. "Apart from the Sainik Colony, the NEET is another issue which will keep the pot boiling," said a top official asking not to be named. MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone who resigned from the portfolio of Social Welfare ministry would be another hot topic in the Civil Secretariat. Though senior BJP leader Avinash Rai Khanna recently hinted that Lone would get back to his office, his presence or absence will be equally newsy. Besides, employees of Government Corporations were waiting for the Civil Secretariat to open, to press for their demands. In the wake of inputs of protests outside the Civil Secretariat and at Kashmir's media hub, the Mushtaq Memorial Press Enclave, security bandobast has been redoubled in the civil lines. Sources said given the challenges, Mehbooba was being advised to avoid talking to media after the scheduled guard of honor. "Though speaking to media on the first day of secretariat has been a tradition, her advisors want her to avoid this in the interest of the smooth governance lest any fresh controversy pops up," said a PDP leader privy to the negotiations. However the regional party is confident of Mehbooba. "All her life she has been an Iron Lady who took challenges only to overcome them. She knows how to turn ropewalk into cakewalk!" |
