BJP's military policy: Defence establishment says won't vacate land in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 8: The military establishment in J&K has finally asserted and asserted to the extent that it has reportedly told the concerned authorities at the Centre that it will not vacate any piece of land in the militant and separatist-infested J&K unless they were allotted other pieces of land, which are suitable for military operations and training purposes. "We need alternate and suitable land. We cannot vacate land after land in J&K. We have not only to defend the borders with hostile countries like China and Pakistan but also maintain law and order on occasions," a top Army official was quoted as saying. "That is the only condition (allotment of alternate pieces of land at suitable places) under which Army would hand over any Defence land to the State Government," he was quoted as saying. So much so, the defence establishment in the state, which knows where the shoe is pinching, has sent a delegation of some top military soldiers to New Delhi to discuss the whole issue with the Indian Defence Ministry and make it loud and clear that the defence establishment in J&K will not vacate any piece of land as the security environment in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular is very hostile, alarming and disturbing. A report in this regard said, "The Army has also deputed a delegation from the Northern Command, headquartered at Udhampur, headed by a senior Army officer, to Army Headquarters in New Delhi to work out the options for handing of Army land in hinterland in time-bound manner but with a rider that it would get alternate land from the State". The defence establishment in J&K also wants regularization of land in Gulmarg in place of Tattoo Ground and has reportedly asked for Tragbal meadows in Bandipora for firing range in lieu of TosaMaidaan as Army already has 200 hectares at Tragbal. Besides, the Army wants correction in the State Government records, which wrongly show that "Army has 8.42 lakh kanals of land in their possession". The Army claims that only 5.7 lakh kanals land is under their possession. It is pertinent to mention here that the Northern Command of the Army has been directed by the authorities in J&K to vacate 2493.77 kanals of land in all three regions of the State, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. It has been ordered to vacate 1710.77 kanals of land at Tattoo Grounds, 297 kanals land at Wuzur and 220 kanals land at Kalsar, all in Kashmir; 136 kanals of land at Jammu Airport; and 130 kanals land at Leh. Besides, the Army has been directed to vacate the land adjoining Jammu University. Not only this, the political establishment in the state has also asked the Army to vacate Kargil plateau for establishing a township. Remember, on March 18, 2016, Governor NN Vohra had in a meeting with top Army officials directed the Army to vacate four strategic locations, including Tatoo Ground, Srinagar, and High grounds, Anantnag, latest by March 31, and his order (in this case the order of the BJP government at the Centre) had been interpreted as a step taken to placate the PDP, a votary of demilitarization. The objective was, according to concerned citizens, to induce the PDP leadership to form coalition government with the BJP. Now that the defence establishment in J&K has out its foot down and made its stand on the strategic locations under its possession clear, it is hoped that the Modi Government would appreciate their concerns as well as appreciate the situation as it exists in the state and not do any thing to weaken our war machine in the region, which has become hot bed of anti-India intrigues. The Modi Government's military policy so far has been highly questionable and demoralizing with many reports emanating from the defence establishment in the state that "our soldiers have been seething with anger". What has angered our soldiers in the state all the more was the manner in which one of our Army commanders was made to tender an apology for the crime the Army had not committed and the manner in which bunkers in Handwara were dismantled and murder charges slapped against our soldiers following the Handwara incident. It is also hoped that the Modi Government would order the Army in J&K to eliminate separatists and terrorists by taking recourse to aerial bombardment like Pakistan has been doing since months now in Balochistan and other areas to eradicate anti-state elements. |
