Not by odd-even formula but by widening of roads | | | After not much success of odd-even formula which was implemented twice in Delhi, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seems to be toying with the idea of implementing it in Jammu and Kashmir too. Before giving a thought to it, she needs to recast the master plan for the cities of Jammu and Srinagar so that the ongoing traffic congestion is resolved through wide roads and better road management. Well, odd-even formula may not hold the ground in Jammu and Kashmir which is a favourite destination of tourists and pilgrims. Imagine even if 10 per cent of the 80 lakh pilgrims, who visit Mata Vaishno Devi annually, travel to Jammu and Katra in their cars, they will have to face severe problems if the odd-even formula is in vogue. As far as Srinagar is concerned, imagine if 10 per cent of the five to six lakh pilgrims to the holy Amarnath cave travel by their cars, they may not be allowed to enter the city because of the odd-even formula being in vogue in there. If 20 per cent of 10 to 20 lakh tourists, who plan to holiday in Kashmir, travel to Srinagar by their private cars, they could face problems which a tourist usually does not like. Tourists expect a hassle-free stay at the place of their sojourn. Once this experiment is implemented, it can cast thick shadow on pilgrim traffic and tourists’ arrival in Jammu and Kashmir. Concerned over increased tragic congestion in the valley Mehbooba has requested the youth of Kashmir to voluntarily take up the odd-even formula on Delhi pattern. “The intelligent students of the valley should come forward and give odd-even formula a try,” said Mehbooba, who is upset over growing traffic mess in the state’s summer capital. She said she wanted to request the students that they should give odd-even a try and set an example. “We can see hundreds of cars outside colleges and universities. There is a dearth of parking space in the city. In the mornings, we have office and school rush. So, I request the students to set an example by adopting odd-even fomula,” she said. “If they take an initiative by adopting the odd-even formula, they will be appreciated and we can take it further,” she said and pointed out that if they succeeded, government officials will slowly follow the suit. Students should start it by trying it out for 10-15 days. It will not only de-congest the traffic but also save fuel. If they succeed and show us the way, slowly our government officials will follow them, “she said. When durbar offices move from Srinagar to Jammu, congestion and regular traffic jams start in Jammu, and when these move to Srinagar, severe problem of traffic jams and congestion is witnessed there. Implementing odd-even formula is not an answer to this problem. Just see how many shopping complexes have been added in the state’s twin capitals? It is almost mushroom growth of shopping complexes as a result of which roads get choked when the shoppers park their cars outside shops. After implementing the new Master Plan or after the Government of India implements the smart city scheme, the possibilities for a free flow of traffic may become bright. So, Mehbooba should persuade Government of India to include Jammu and Srinagar in the smart cities programme which is the only answer to congestion and traffic jams. Yes, various measures are needed for removing congestion and traffic jams. |
