Proposal to accord VIP status to teachers shelved | Ministers not teachers are the VIPs | | Peerzada Ummar
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 11: The government has rejected the proposal of providing VIP protocol to the teachers in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the fraternity already holds exalted position in the society. Ironically, it was the education ministry in December last year that claimed that it was mulling to accord a VIP status to the teachers but merely six months down the line, the government could be found in the denial mode of making any such promise ever. Earlier, the government was all set to give Warrant of Precedence to the teachers in the state so that they get the deserved respect and make it obligatory for others to offer courtesy to the teaching fraternity. "A long-term and effective intervention could be inclusion of teachers in the J&K Warrant of Precedence so that we can fundamentally change the way teachers are looked at and they not only get the deserved respect but there is statutory obligation on others to offer courtesy. Their official status will also be elevated," Director School Education Kashmir Shah Faesal was quoted by reports as having said last year in December. It was also proposed that in the J&K Warrant of Protocol, issued vide Govt Order NO. 113-H & P of 2001 dated 16.07.2001, clause 28(a) may be introduced to include teachers, meaning all category of employees engaged in active teaching profession viz, professors/lecturers/masters/teachers. But during the recent assembly session, the government made it clear that teachers already hold an 'exalted' position in the society as they are custodians of the future generation. "The natural respect for the teacher does not require any formal conferment. The precedent that was to be followed was that of the developed countries model where the teaching profession attracts the best and the brightest and where besides attractive remunerative packages , legal, statutory, and social privileges are accorded to teachers in their routine and administrative transactions. The issue was raised in state's upper house during the budget session wherein the government was asked whether the state government is considering to provide VIP protocol to the teaching community acros the state and what privileges would be given to the teachers. But the government in its reply made it clear that making teacher the VIP in Jammu and Kashmir would be a distant dream and that no such proposal is under consideration. Furthermore, the plight of the teachers in Jammu and Kashmir continues to remain worrisome for many but the government continues to pay no heed to them. The teachers recruited under the SSA have to wait for their monthly salaries for months with their repeated pleas falling to deaf ears. "Leave alone the proposal to enhance and restore the dignity of those engaged in the teaching profession, this government isn't even ready to listen to the woes faced by the fraternity. Image a teacher isn't being paid for six months and this government wants that teachers to perform well. This is truly a sorry state of affairs," says a senior official who was part of the team- pursuing the issue of restoring the lost honour of the teaching community.
