PDP again shows BJP its worth, drops resolution on China | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 14: What happened in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council on Monday was both disappointing and unique. Disappointing because the Chairman of the Legislative Council Anayat Ali (PDP MLC) deleted BJP's resolution on the Chinese presence in Gilgit-Baltistan and unique because the NC and the Congress MLCs opposed the Chairman's decision. The BJP and opposition members created a ruckus in the Legislative Council over the deletion of a resolution condemning the presence of the Chinese army in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, which, like POJK, is legitimately Indian. The BJP's private member resolution read: "This august House strongly condemns the presence of the Chinese army in Gilgit-Baltistan area which are part of our territory and recommends to the Government of India to take up the matter at the appropriate level". Deleting the resolution, the government maintained that the Legislative Council couldn't discuss issues pertaining to foreign affairs and defence-related affairs and the BJP lawmakers rejected the suggestion asking the Chairman under what rules the resolution was dropped and the NC and the Congress lawmakers also supporting the BJP lawmakers. The BJP lawmakers also countered the Chairman's suggestion by saying that his suggestion was untenable as the "House had routinely taken up issues about Pakistan". They also disagreed with Minister of Law Abdul Haq Khan that the "Chairman had the right to drop a resolution". The BJP lawmakers did make a point when they said there were umpteen instances which showed the House taking up issues concerning foreign policy matters. The House should not have dropped the resolution, as it had the potential of sending a wrong message across the border. Indeed, it sent a wrong message in the sense that both China and Pakistan were quite happy over the development - development that endorsed the presence of the Chinese Army in the territories which belong to India. The move was also against the Indian stand on POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, What happened in the House was also very unique. Unique because the NC and the Congress lawmakers, who had been extending unflinching support to the PDP as far as its stand on Pakistan and the related issues was concerned, surprised everyone by making common cause with the BJP. Notwithstanding the fact that the BJP insisted that the resolution should be discussed and adopted and that the PDP held its ground firmly, the fact remains that it was the BJP which as put on the mat by its own ally. It's a different matter that the BJP is still in the government. What it's also not surprising. Such things also happened in the past and the BJP swallowed all the insults willingly and cheerfully. |
