33% turnout despite militant threats, boycott call | Anantnag by-polls | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, June 22: Defying militant threats and separatist boycott call, 28446 including 638 displaced Kashmiri Pandits cast their votes today in Anantnag by-polls. Voting for Anantnag Assembly segment that fell vacant with the death of Former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in January this year, began on Wednesday morning at sharp 7:00am amid tight security. In initial hours, voters didn't turn up apparently due to holy month of Ramadan, however polling picked up pace after 10:00 am. Few polling booths setup in Anantnag town witnessed low turnout and were giving a deserted look throughout the day, however the booths setup in rural areas of the assembly segment witnessed brisk polling. Wantrag village of the assembly segment recorded highest voter turnout of 79%. Among 713 voters, 566 exercised their franchise. Contrary to this, among 598 voters only 40 turn to vote at Hazratbal-C. Dailgam, Chehadipora, Danter, Rambirpora, Fathepora also witnessed brisk polling throughout the day. New Qazibagh-B polling both were only 71 among 844 turn to vote, along with Anchidora-F, Khan Bazar recorded lowest turnout of 8% and 9%. The Islamabad assembly segment went to polls today after it fell vacant with the demise of former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The assembly segment has a total 84,081 eligible voters and only 29084 voters cast their votes today. It comprised of 15384 males, 3084 females and 368 migrant votes. Election Commission had setup 102 polling booths in the assembly segment and none among them was categorized as normal, however surprisingly voting ended peacefully. Militant outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashker-e-Toiba had issued threats and warned voters of serious consequences if they turned to vote or indulged in any sort of activity related to elections. Both the outfits had circulated threatening posters and even carried out attacks during which two policemen lost their lives while maning traffic in busy General Bus stand of Anantnag town. Separatist groups led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah and others had also called for the boycott. Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti who is seeking her re-election from the assembly segment also visited several polling booths during the day. She was spotted clicking selfies with first time voters and shaking hands with elderly women.
