No enthusiasm shown by migrants to cast vote | Out of 1799 only 655 migrants cast vote | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 22: No enthusiasm was seen among the migrant voters for the Anantang bye elections today where Chief Minster and PDP candidate Mehbooba Mufti is tied in a triangular contest. Only 655 votes were polled at 15 polling booths in Jammu and one polling both each at Udhampur and Delhi by Kashmiri migrants out of 1799 votes for which the Kashmiri migrants have filled up M Forms. Out of 3900 total migrant votes in the Constituency, only 1799 forms were filled up by Kashmiri migrants showing their willingness to cast the votes in the bye elections. Out of them 1765 M Forms were filled up for 15 polling booths in Jammu district, 18 M Forms for one polling booth in Udhampur and 16 M Forms for one polling booth at Delhi. However no enthusiasm was seen among the migrants especially in Jammu to cast their vote and out of 1765 migrant voters who have filled up their M Forms only 630 turned up to cast their vote in Jammu. While out of 16 votes 12 votes were cast at Udhampur by Kashmiri migrants. In Delhi out of 18 votes 13 migrants turned up for casting their vote. The main reason for less turnout of migrant voters in Jammu was heavy morning rains and people preferred to remain indoors. Though weather improved by he afternoon but the turnout did not increase. The voting was peaceful throughout the day and no untoward incident was reportedly except at Chinore where the NC and PDP workers had a verbal clash. It may be recalled that Anantnag Assembly Segment has a total number of 85,000 voters and the bye elections to the Constituency was necessitated due to the death of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed last year. There were eight candidates in the fray including Mehbooba Mufti of PDP. The Congress has fielded Hilal Ahmed Shah while NC has fielded Mushtaq Ahmed Misgar to challenge Mehbooba. Both Congress and NC which were in alliance last time had contested the elections separately which is making chances of Mehbooba bright. Among the eight candidates five are independents and one belongs to minority Sikh community also. |
