After CM's visit, this thana regrets loss of hafta | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 22: Even as the civil and police administration here has come under the scanner of Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti for poor performance following her recent surprise inspection of some City center areas, a police Thana here is regretting subsequent "loss of hafta." Since June 17 evening, when the Chief Minister inspected areas like Hari Singh High Street, Maharaja Bazar and Hazuri Bagh, where she got stuck in traffic jam, cops from the concerned Thana led by their SHO, often arrive in the area only to beat up pavement vendors while caught selling goods, on the busy route where any such activity has been banned by the Chief Minister. On Wednesday, the cops yet again zeroed in Maharaja Bazar -Hazuri Bagh locality only to ransack the carts operating in the area. This led to verbal duel between the cops and the pavement vendors. "You have been putting us to undue losses by ransacking our carts. If this had to be your response why did you in the first instance allow us to operate here. You people seem to be frustrated over our operations," the Rehriwala could be heard telling the cops. In the meantime, some area shopkeepers also came out in support of the pavement vendors. "You are putting them to undue loss," the traders said. But the reply from the SHO was shocking. "It (their not operating) is a bigger loss to us as well," the SHO, as per the witnesses, instantly responded. This left the bystanders break into laughter-peels. "Ha! Ha! So this is means you were taking Hafta?" some bystanders ridiculed before fleeing from the spot lest they face police fury. While the SHO got apparently nervous of what he uttered, some of his escort cops started "clarifying their position." "Basically we had asked these Rehriwala to operate at specific timings at nominal charges but they didn't listen to us. Now finally our job is at stake as Chief Minister has herself seen the mess," the cops, as per bystanders, told the pavement vendors. Scores of pavement vendors operate in the area. The complainants said the vendors would regularly grease the palms of cops from concerned Thana. But Mehbooba's visit has affected the business while the SHO is "angry over losses." On the fateful day, prompted by poor public feedback, the Chief Minister drove down the congested locality only to find brazen violation of her directives. As her motorcade got stuck, she found that area flooded with pavement vendors and roadside display of goods, while poor sanitation and "snails pace of public transport" equally remained a point of concern. In the wake of ongoing construction of the Jahangir Chowk Ram Bagh flyover, the Chief Minister has issued standing instructions that the pavement vending be disallowed on the busy routes. But street vendors continue to play hide and seek. Meanwhile sources said the authorities have blamed the concerned SHO for the mess in the area. The police however denies allegations of grabbing Hafta. "We do our duty honestly," said an official from the concerned Police Station. |
