KUPWARA, June 23: While three militants were killed today in an encounter by security forces in Kupwara district of North Kashmir, another encounter broke out in the evening in Drugmulla area.
A police officer said security forces began a search operation after they received specific information about the presence of 2-3 militants in the forests of Lolab. While they were making searches, the militants, who were hiding, fired upon the forces, triggering a gun battle.
He said militants hiding inside the woods opened fire on a joint team of 18 RR and police and tried to break the cordon. However, the forces engaged them in a gunfight, killing all of them.
He said the bodies of all the three militants had been recovered from the encounter site along with 3- AK-47-rifles and other war like stores.
"The slain militants are likely to be the part of heavily armed group of infiltrators whose one member was killed on June 15 last. Its other members had managed to gave forces a slip before killing 56 RR soldier Signalman Ajay Choudhary", a senior army officer said.
He said the group of infiltrators was intercepted by soldiers of 56 RR on June 14 in Katwara forest area near Jetgali in Machhil sector.
On June 16, four militants were shot dead when army had foiled an infiltration bid near LoC in Tangdhar area. A soldier had also sacrificed his life.
On June 20, militants had managed to escape before injuring a soldier in Sogam forests. The encounter had begun hours after the arrest of LeT militant Abu Ukasah alias Hanzullah by police from Sogam market when he was busy in purchasing some edible items.
Meanwhile, another encounter broke out this evening between militants and security forces in Drugmulla area of Kupwara.
It is learnt that 47 RR and SOG had cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in Waterkhani forests of Drugmulla, following information about the presence of militants.
Sources informed that exchange of fire was going on intermittently between the two sides, but there was no report of any causality till the last reports came in.
