Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 23: The alleged negligence of construction giant, Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), Thursday left two shopkeepers severely injured after the wooden shuttering of Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh Expressway Corridor (flyover) abruptly collapsed and fell down at uptown Solina.
Witnesses told 'Early Times' that the wooden shuttering abruptly fell down whose big log rammed into the nearby meat shop leaving two shopkeepers injured who were later taken to hospital for treatment.
"They did not bother to inform us that the shuttering has to be removed, if we had any information we would have closed our shops to avoid the incident, there is no policemen or any employee of ERA deployed who could supervise the work," Showkat Ahmad a shopkeeper said.
He said that the construction of flyover not only rendered hundreds of shopkeepers unemployed but also put their lives in big trouble.
Director ERA, Basharat Ahmad did not respond to the repeated calls and messages of this reporter.
"We are already sitting idle at our shops as there is no business since government started construction of the flyover, this is not a minor issue but this incident rattled all of us as the department has made no security arrangements for pedestrians or shopkeepers," he said.
He said that the shopkeepers have been insisting the government to rehabilitate them but no firm measure has been taken so far in this regard. One of the injured Sahrief said that he received injury in his arm while another in leg "it is really a miracle, we are thankful to god that we are still alive, when the shuttering fell down a big wooden log rammed into my shop leaving both of us injured"
He said that when the shopkeepers brought the issue into the notice of ERA officials they apologized for the mistake. "This is not the way, how could they take this issue so lightly, they should take some firm measures for the safety of the shopkeepers and pedestrians as well instead of folding their hands before us," said Sharif. Meanwhile the shopkeepers staged demonstrations against the government and ERA for allegedly putting their lives in trouble.
"We have been befooled by the government, either government should seriously think about our rehabilitation or we would be forced to come on the roads along with our families." the agitated shopkeepers threatened.
