APSCC delegation call on HM; demands minority status | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 23 : A delegation of All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) today called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and presented a memorandum, demanding minority status in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Jammu and Kashmir government today announced in the Legislative Council that there is no plan to grant minority status to Sikhs in the state since they have been declared national minority. APSCC delegation led by chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina today met Mr Singh in New Delhi and presented a memorandum to him. Former Chairman of the National Minority Commission S Trilochan Singh also accompanied the delegation, Mr Raina said in a statement. He said the memorandum demanded extension of National Minority Commission to Jammu and Kashmir which is already promised by PDP, in their manifesto, the coalition partner of BJP in the state. The delegation informed the union minister about the migration of Sikh community from far flung areas of Kashmir valley to other places due to economic suffering. They also apprised the Minister that the youth particularly of Sikh minority are in the clutches of unemployment and a large number of students fail to continue their higher studies due to financial strain. They demanded that the Sikh families migrated from villages to city areas of Srinagar city during the turmoil be given the status of migrant within the state. Giving assurance to the delegation, Mr Singh said the demands of Sikh minority will be taken up on priority basis by a core committee on Kashmir affairs committee instituted by the Centre.
