JK's killer roads kill 300 people every year | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 1: The roads in the Jammu and Kashmir state are proving to be the killer ones, killing hundreds every year but the authorities here are yet to take any measure to set up the much hyped Institute of Driving Training and Research and Inspection and Certification Centre (ICC) at the twin capitals Srinagar and Jammu. Reports informed that the snail's pace work and lethargic attitude of the administration on key concerns has put the people of the state in a precarious situation. "The funds have already been almost sanctioned for the institute but the concerned department seems to be less concerned about establishing any institute that could have been imparting professional training to the aspiring drivers in Jammu and Kashmir," says a senior official of the transport department. He added that the project continues to remain in limbo for there is lack of serious approach in the implementation of the project. "One more project that was almost approved was that the government would post officials at the accident prone areas of the state so that they could guide people about the precautionary measures that are needed to be taken while driving in those areas. But unfortunately, there are no officials posted at the accident prone areas and such a non- serious approach is adding woes of the people here." Pertinently, the data reveals that there were as many as 8733 persons who got injured in 6067 road accidents in just three years. Deaths due to road accidents in the state also happen to be high compared to many other states. The number of persons dying in road accidents in the same period was 892, that means almost 300 deaths every year. There has been no relief to the pain and sorrow that families of road accident victims suffer each year. News and police reports are laden with gory accident details taking place across the state, particularly in areas where there is no chance of survival. People and vehicles being devoured by gorges has become a regular feature in the state. The state government, which is in the know of the problem and its gravity, has not done anything tangible to bring down the growing number of road accidents. From the lackadaisical response of the administration, it appears that they are still clueless as from where to begin. According to experts, what makes road accidents a tricky issue is the uncertainties about when and where they might occur. Though there doesn't seem to be any method to know when they might occur, but with scientific means the weak spots can easily be identified. Experts have been observing that besides human factors, road accidents are also spurred by factors like physical shape and conditions of roads, bends, elevations and declines. It is the responsibility of the R&B department and road building firms who are awarded the contracts to keep in consideration road safety and employ such scientific methods that minimize the risks of accidents. |
