Shortage of docs in hospitals affects healthcare
7/1/2016 10:47:25 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 1: The shortage of doctors in rural areas of the State in general and Jammu region in particular has led to problems of common man.
Notwithstanding the claims of State Government to establish five new medical colleges and two AIIMS type Medical institutes in the State the performance of Health and Medical Education has been totally dismal in the State.
The shortage of doctors has forced the people to come to streets in rural belt of the Jammu region and two days back a public demonstration was held at Kishtwar the home town of Minister of Health and Medical Education, Bali Bhagat for the shortage of doctors in DH Kishtwar and other hospitals.
The shortage of doctors in DH Kishtwar and other hospitals as well as dispensaries has been a cause of concern for common man as despite the repeated pleas to authorities concerned they have not taken any step in filling up the vacant posts.
In Kishtwar District Hospital out of two sanctioned posts of surgeons one is vacant for last six months after the transfer of the doctor to Bhadarwah. The post of Radiologist and dermatologist is also vacant in this hospital while the ENT post has not been sanctioned for the hospital though a large number of patients with ENT problems visit the Kishtwar hospital for their treatment daily.
Out of two sanctioned posts of gynecologists one is vacant in the district hospital after one gynecologist was transferred from Kisthwar.
According to sources over 10 posts of Assistant surgeons in regular and NHRM category are vacant in the DH Kishtwar while a large number of para medical staff posts are also unfilled for a lot of time with authorities taking no pains in filling up the same.
Shamsher Singh Bhandari a member of Civil Society Kishtwar and senior Congress leader from the area said that failure of authorities to fill up the vacant posts of doctors has paralyzed the medicare services in the district totally. He said despite the repeated pleas no steps are being taken to fill up the vacant posts.
Sources said the situation is also bad in other hospitals of Thatri, Dachan, Padder and Inderwal.
Even the shortage of doctors has been reported from DH Doda, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch and Samba districts as well as other sub district of the hospitals of the region.
Sources said the main reason for the shortage of doctors in rural belt is that no doctor wants to serve in far-flung areas due to lack of facilities and the government has also failed to evolve a policy in this regard over the years.
Sources said that it should have been mandatory for the doctors to serve in rural belt at least for one year after passing their MBBS before applying for the post graduate studies.
In addition to it should be also made mandatory for every PG doctor to serve for one year in rural belt as compulsory for his future promotion and selection in medical Education Department. If such a policy is framed there will be no dearth of doctors in rural belt and peoples problems will also be eased to a great extent.
This policy will work and no doctor will be in any problem of giving one year tenure in rural belt sources said.
