Unprecedented security arrangements in place for safe Amarnath yatra | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 1: Three-tier unprecedented security arrangements had been made for smooth and peaceful conduct of the 48-day-long pilgrimage to holy Amarnath cave shrine, situated at 13000 feet above sea level in south Kashmir Himalayas from tomorrow. Large number of pilgrims, from different parts of the country, besides Sadhus have already arrived at Nunwan Pahalgam and Baltal base camps, where devotees would be provided free langer, health and other facilities. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is arriving here today on a two-day visit to Kashmir valley. Besides chairing a high level security meeting Mr Singh could also join puja at the shrine on the opening day of annual yatra tomorrow alongwith Governor N N Vohra, who is chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Official sources told said that though there is no specific information about militant plan to target the pilgrims, authorities donot want to take any chance. Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) top commander Burhan had also recently announced that Amarnath pilgrims are guest of people of Kashmir and they will not be harmed. However, in view of recent spurt in the militant activities, particularly attack on CRPF vehicle in which 8 personnel were killed and 22 others were injured recently, additional paramilitary forces were airlifted from Jammu to Kashmir during the past few days to further strengthen the security measures. Troops from Army have already taken position on higher reaches on both traditional Pahalgam and shortest Baltal tracks to foil any attempt by militants to target the pilgrims through mountains. Besides security forces already engaged in counter-insurgency operations, additional security forces had already been deployed. Hundreds of security forces, particularly drawn from CRPF were guarding the Srinagar-Jammu national highway besides Road Opening Party (ROP) already deployed on the important road. We have set up Control Rooms at different locations which are connected with main station, monitoring the movement of pilgrims. Hundreds of security forces had been deployed in and around the base camp to provide secure environment to yatris, undertaking the pilgrimage from this shortest track. Similar security arrangements had been made at Nunwan Pahalgam base camp. |
