Early Times Report

Reasi, July 21: More than one quintal of food items including milk, soyabean products, flour and biscuits dumped in River Chenab at Arnia at district Reasi became the subject of astonishment for the people of the area who immediately reported in the town, later to know that the commodities were fresh and within the expiry date.
The dumping of the material in the Chenab River caught the attention of the people who were later apprised through the whispering campaign that this material was meant for children and the pregnant mothers of the area who were denied the ration.
Why they were denied the ration became the talk of the town as the further digging into the case revealed that a major scam was behind such waste which otherwise could have been the succor for the children as well as the lactating and pregnant mothers of the area .
What the sources divulged later were quite astonishing as they revealed that the food thrown into river Chenab were out of compulsion by the scamsters, particularly the officers of a particular department wo have been eating into the benefits given to the children and the mothers of the area.
" The officials in the Integrated Child Development Scheme in district Reasi are the most corrupt officials who have been siphoning off the food materials sent by the government of India under the Social Welfare Department and the beneficiaries are devoid of such prerogative ," said one of the source in SWD.
He said that as per the government of India scheme routed through the Social Welfare Department , benefits are percolated for the Integrated Child Development Scheme where tones of material that include food items like biscuits , milk, soyabeans , moong dal , flour and rice is given to such nodal agencies in different villages which are benefitted to the lactating mothers , children and the pregnant ladies.
Here in district Reasi, the officials' nexus related to ICDS, the officials relieve the anganwari workers deployed for the purpose and are asked to stay home while the ration received in the ICDS centers is equally distributed among the officials as well as the anganwari workers , a News item that Early Times had already carried .
In this case of Arnia, it was reported that as soon as the directive came from the higher authorities to the police to swoop on the defaulters and knowing this, the fraudsters, the officials concerned with ICDS immediately emptied their homes and in the process dumped the fresh ration into river Chenab.
While this correspondent tried to contact the higher officials for a word on it, none of them came forward ion this connection. The most disquieting factor here that arises in this context is while the children are deprived of their food, the officials are eating into this scheme and filling their coffers.
