Ahead of police reshuffle, Mehbooba meets top cops | | | Early Times Report srinagar, July 21: Ahead of the much expected reshuffle in the police department in Kashmir, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has been holding deliberations with some of the top cops, who are likely to get prize postings in the coming days. Sources said in the past few days, Chief Minister held one-on-one meetings with some senior officials including Inspector General of Police (IGP)s. Sources said last evening one of the IGPs, who has already headed Kashmir range for around two years, held detailed deliberations with the Chief Minister. The talks, which lasted for around one hour, are understood to have been fruitful while Mehbooba is impressed with his previous track record. "This IGP figures at number one of the list of probable for the post IGP Kashmir," said a source in the Chief Minister's Secretariat. Besides him, the Chief Minister is understood to have met some other officials including Senior Superintendent of Police, who are likely to get crucial postings to head restive districts as a part of the reshuffle. However as already reported by Early Times, the government continues to be indecisive on who can "successfully replace" the incumbent SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar. "Srinagar is truly the biggest challenge and though the incumbent SSP has successfully completed his scheduled two year tenure, we are yet to arrive to conclusion as to who can be his best replacement even as two names are among probable," said an insider. An official who has served traffic police department twice, is likely to be posted as SSP Srinagar. While the state police has come under severe criticism for failing to keep situation under control in the wake killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8, sources said the union home ministry was already not satisfied with the performance of the cops in the Valley. Last month following a deadly attack on CRPF convoy on the Pampore highway, a three member team from the Home Ministry had visited Kashmir to take feedback of the ground situation. Sources said the Union Home Ministry had expressed serious concern over security lapse. Since then a major reshuffle was expected in police while the prevalent crises in Kashmir has only furthered the need for reshuffle, said an official. |
