Officers of Police, civil administration called on campus | JU authorities trying to intimidate striking employees! | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 26: In what is being seen as a bid to intimidate the striking class IV employees, the Jammu University administration today called officers from the Police and district administration to talk to them, even as they had no locus or relevance in the ongoing imbroglio that has plagued JU administration for last many days. DIG of the range, DC and SDM South were called to the campus allegedly to prevail upon the striking employees to call off their stir which is going on for close to 40 days now. "We are the employees of the university, which is an autonomous institution and these officers have nothing to do with our demands which are of financial nature, then what was the motive behind calling these officers to talk to us?" asked one of the striking employees, alleging that it was a ploy of the university administration to intimidate them and coerce them into calling off their stir. Sources also disclose that the efforts were earlier made to impel the leaders of the non gazetted employees union to meet these officers at a government guest house in Gandhinagar, but they refused to do the same. A former VC when contacted, expressed his dismay on such a move. "This sounds comic that officers of the district administration, who have no locus in the university administration were called to talk to the striking employees" he said, preferring not be named. Sources in the university claim that the striking employees had started their stir symbolically, by shunning work for few hours initially, but the matter was mishandled by the authorities who failed to assure the employees that their demands shall be looked into. "A task force was made to negotiate with the employees and large advertisements were issued in news papers at huge cost touniversity exchequer, but to no avail. Vice chancellor should have been more forthright and pragmatic in addressing the issue", said an officer of the university. Meanwhile, the unwarranted move of the VC to call officers from police and civil administration is being seen as a ploy to intimidate the striking employees who are mulling to intensify their stir in the coming days. |
