Locals apprehends 'garbage piles may lead to epidemic, seeks authorities' intervention | Post Shutdown ill-effects: | | Early Times Report budgam, July 26: As the shutdown and curfew enters 16th day in Kashmir valley, the heaps of garbage has accumulated not only in Srinagar city but in several other towns making people to apprehend health hazards that if the garbage is not scientifically disposed off within a few days, it may lead to an epidemic. Details available with Early Times revealed that huge amount of garbage has been accumulated around dozens of residential colonies. The officials of Municipal Corporation / Municipal Committees are not turning up for undertaking sanitation work especially in towns located outside Srinagar. During the strike in Srinagar the garbage dumpers too witnessed the ire of protestors and were damaged at several places by protesters which one of reasons that the garbage is left on the road sides. "The piles of heaps scattered all around and are emitting foul smell especially in areas such as Bagh e Mehtab and Chanapora, In Bagh e Mehtab area protesters used SMC dumpers to blocking road, with the result the garbage is left unattended on the road side, "asserted locals. Locals alleged that in Budgam & Chadoora towns majority of the sweepers (Safai Karamcharis) are not turning up for work as majority of them hail from far flung areas. This has also caused severe sanitation problem in these areas. Pertinent to mention that garbage dumping is a serious problem in Budgam district. At a time when the whole country is organizing sanitation programmes under clean India programme "Swach Bharat Mission" , the authorities at the helm of affairs in J&K are leaving no stone un-turned to bring disrepute to the state by getting involved into anti-people and anti environment activities. According to reliable sources the officials of local municipality in Chadoora town are involved in dumping of all the garbage into the Doodh-Ganga nallah which flows through this town. Ironically this is the water which is supplied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to people in Budgam as well as Srinagar districts what who cares. Further local alleged that successive governments have failed to establish a scientific dumping site for Chadoora town. The municipality employees thrown all the trash in local water body and on certain occasions it is transported to Budgam dumping site which is already overflowed with garbage" said Mukhtar Ahmad a local resident of Chadoora town. Another local alleged, "Every day tons of garbage including biodegradable waste and even Bio Medical waste from local hospital besides dead animal are dumped into Doodh Ganga in Chadoora while some kms ahead the PHE department lifts the same water at Kralpora Water Supply Scheme for its due supply. "There have been incidents of gastrointestinal infections in the area and its main reason is unhygienic water being supplied from Kralpora water supply plant, sources said, adding, "locals have urged upon authorities to come to their rescue." "We appeal Commissioner SMC, Deputy Commissioner Budgam to personally visit Srinagar outskirts, Budgam and Chadoora towns respectively and see all the mess, locals said. "If the garbage is not disposed off scientifically this may lead to an epidemic especially during the ongoing crisis," said Dr Ajaz Ahmad a medical doctor from Chanapora Srinagar |
