Witnessed glaring 'inaugural occasions', Rajouri Bridge still in 'doldrums' | | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Aug 2: For political gains a bridge was inaugurated by the different ministers in the heart of Rajouri city in a deplorable manner the contractor today left the work without giving it any proper linkage to the vital bridge of Rajouri as the State Government allegedly has failed to release the land /infrastructure compensation in favor of the people. Though completed the almost bridge now is being used by the people to park their cars as the link road which was temporarily constructed to divert the traffic on this bridge has been damaged several times due to incessant rains and floods. The bridge again was formally inaugurated by Abdul Rehaman Veeri, Minister for Public Works and Parliamentary Affairs in the presence of Ch Zulfikar Ali, Minister for Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Abdul Ghani Kohli, Minister of Animal, Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries, local MLA and MLC. Ironically the bridge yet has failed to serve its purpose and people are awaiting for its due usage and looking for early linkage to the said bridge. "Even at the time of inauguration of the bridge no mention was made by the Minister about the release of land compensation despite the fact he was informed about the matter. However, he has assured to take up the matter at higher level," said a senior officer of Rajouri PWD (R&B) department If recalled here the construction work of the bridge and link road was allotted to a Jammu based contractor A.K Constructions. The Contractor had completed the bridge in the year 2015 and thereafter started work on the link road, people whose land/infrastructure were acquired didn't allow them to execute work without the release of compensation. "As the people didn't allow the contractor to carry on the work on link road, the contractor after collecting Rs 6 crores (out of Rs 7 crores for the construction of the bridge) had abandoned the work and since then the department has been facing the wrath of the people" said a senior officer of PWD(R&B). Besides at several stages including in the meeting of District Development Board (DDB) the land compensation issue was even raised before the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti and despite several assurances the money was not released yet. "Had the government released the compensation in the installments the people would have not raised objected the ongoing work and bridge would have been made operational by now" said a senior PWD officer and added Originally the land was acquired for the construction of double lane but due to financial restrictions it would be made single lane. Despite attempts Abdul Rehamn Veeri, Minister of PWD (R&B) & Parliamentary affairs was not available for his comments, but sources within department maintained that he has assured the PWD officers to soon release compensation for infrastructure so that the work on link road may be started. The total cost of the project including bridge and link road was about Rs22.50 crores and the cost of bridge was about Rs 7 crores and rest of the amount was meant for the compensation in favor of the people whose land and infrastructure was acquired to construct the link road. |
