Burhan's killing an accident | BJP in the line of fire | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 2: There was a time when the Congress would term Farooq Abdullah a threat to national security and would also bring down his government. The case in point is what Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said about then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah in the 1980. It is a different story that the Congress later on again shared power with the National Conference. Significantly, the BJP also used to share the views of the Congress and would use the same language for the NC and Farooq Abdullah. It used to hold anti-Farooq and anti-government demonstrations at regular intervals and would also demand the resignation of Farooq Abdullah almost on a daily basis. It was its routine affair. But today things stand totally changed as far as the BJP is concerned. It is the BJP which is being termed today a threat to national security. So much so, a demonstration was organized in Jammu on Monday to register protest against the BJP and the minister who two days ago crossed all the lines and shamelessly said that the killing of Hizbul Mujahideed terrorist Burhan Wani was not an achievement of the security forces but Burhan was killed by an accident. "The killing of Burhan Wani was an accident," he told leading news channels a day after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti described the killing of Wani as a "coincidence". And who organized the demonstration? The youth wing of the Congress party, which used to be the BJP's first target. The kind of slogans the protestors raised, the kind of language they used all demonstrated that things for the BJP have turned extremely difficult even in a region, where sections used to hold it in high esteem. The protestors not just termed the BJP minister a threat to national security and demanded his resignation but also attacked the whole policy of the BJP-led NDA Government towards Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. Insiders inform that "almost all in the BJP have also turned against the said minister" and "they have come to believe the BJP ministers have not only become a threat to national security but to the very survival and existence of the party". The BJP leadership needs to sit up to examine the nature of damage the statement of the minister has caused to the state, the nation and the party. |
