jammu, Aug 2: The favorite assertion of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) before elections was to bring Jammu province on developmental map but after assuming power it has seemingly forgotten the same as despite being in power, it has failed to release a single penny for the development of three basmati villages in RS Pura.
Source in department said that after assuming power in March 2015, the coalition government had decided to start organic farming in Jammu on the pattern of Gujrat and had decided to develop three basmati villages of border belt of R S Pura as organic farming villages, but unfortunately after the lapse of 16 months since the announcement was made, not a single penny has been released for the same.
The villages in which organic farming was decided to be done are in Panchyat Suchetgarh and the villages are Suchetgarh, Vidhipur and Kotranka Khurd.
Initially the funds proposed by government were Rs 2.48 Crores and later same were increased to Rs 5 Crores as an incentive to the farmers for three years.
Ironically after the lapse of more than one year, the government had not release funds for the development of these villages, said Sarpanch of Suchetgarh, Swaran Lal.
"Given the non availability of funds, the farmers of these villages are hesitating to implement the organic farming techniques and the department concerned (Agriculture Deptt), instead of providing incentives to farmers is only motivating to adopt organic farming without providing anything concrete", said a farmer Roshan Kumar of village Vidhipur.
The farmers further said if we adopt organic farming, the cost of produce will be increased many folds and the department concerned has succeeded so far in providing 'Jantri' seed (grass which increases productivity) but that too, at that time when there is no facility of irrigation. Some farmers sow the Jantri but the crop failed due to non availability of irrigation facilities.
The callous approach of the Agriculture department could be gauged from the fact that eventhough the farmers cultivated basmati in their farm , organic fertilizer and other products like insecticide, pesticides were not made available to them.
All legislators of BJP are from Jammu province and the villages selected are also in the constituency of BJP cabinet minister but so far neither the MLA and nor the ministers have bothered to get the funds released for their areas. "From this approach, it seems that BJP leaders are only interested to win elections to attain power and their slogans were only to befool masses", a farmer Krishan Lal said.
It is pertinent to mention here that nearly 75 hectare lands of these villages had been identified for scented Basmati rice crop, but owing to lackadaisical approach of both the government and Agriculture department, the project to produce organic scented basmati, has failed to take off.
