Youth killed in Police firing at Lethpora

SRINAGAR, Aug 2: The death toll in the continued Kashmir valley reached 54 as a youth was killed in police firing at Lethpora on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in the late hours today. Two more persons sustained injuries in the firing incident and they have been shifted to hospital for treatment.
Reports said that a mob reached the Lethpora in South Kashmir's Pulwama district and disrupted traffic, shouting slogans.
Agitated protestors stopped a government vehicle when police guards of the officer travelling in the vehicle came down and tried to persuade the protestors to let the vehicle pass, but as the mob threatened to turn violent, one of the guards opened fire leading to death of one person and injuries to at least two others. The deceased has been identified as Farooq Ahmad.
Meanwhile, more than one dozen persons sustained injuries during day long clashes between protesters and security forces personnel at various places in Kashmir valley. Curfew was in place in downtown areas of Srinagar city and Anantnag in South Kashmir.
Reports said that at least nine persons sustained injuries when police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel used force against a group of protesters at Imam Sahib in South Kashmir's Shopian district today. The clashes erupted after the forces tried to stop the protesters from carrying out a protest rally in the area.
Police and CRPF personnel fired pellets towards the protesters after their attempts to control the situation by lathi-charge and lobbing of teargas shells failed. The injured persons were shifted to the local health centre for treatment. The situation of the injured persons is stated to be stable.
Reports said that scores of people from Arkhara, Hillow and Kadgam areas tried to march towards Imam Sahib village when they were stopped by forces. Protests carried on for hours together in the area.
Reports said that some persons sustained injuries during the clashes that broke out between groups of agitating youth and security forces in North Kashmir's Bandipora district. The clashes started after the forces intercepted a protest rally near Madar village which was heading towards Bandipora town from Arin and Sumlar areas of the district.
The security forces used teargas shells to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes. At least five persons sustained injuries during the protests. Protests also broke out in the Sopore town of this North Kashmir's Bandipora district. Few youth sustained injuries during the protests.
Reports said that rallies were held in Qaimoh and Khudwani areas of Kulgam district in South Kashmir. Bike and car rallies were taken out in Dachnipora village of Bijbehara in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Huge congregation of people also assembled at Jablipora village of Bijbehara to protest against the recent killings. Minor clashes were reported at these places with groups of protesters clashing with the security forces personnel.
In the meantime, the authorities imposed curfew in areas coming under jurisdiction of police stations of Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal and Nowhatta in Srinagar and Anantnag in South Kashmir. Restrictions and strike crippled the life in the other parts of Kashmir valley.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout Kashmir valley remained under control although isolated incidents of stone pelting were reported from Shopian, Kulgam, Awantipora, Sopore and Bandipora.
There were no reports of any injury to anybody today till filing of this report. As a precautionary measure curfew/restrictions were put in place in police stations of North Zone Srinagar and Anantnag town.
