Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 6: Amid ongoing unrest in Kashmir when the state government is struggling to restore law and order, a MLA here is daydreaming that he will soon be again inducted as minister in the state cabinet.
ET learnt from reliable sources that the lawmaker from the Ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), who was a prominent minister in the previous cabinet led by the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, strongly believes that he would soon be calling the shots
again.
As per his loyalists, he is understood to be deriving this inspiration from having been invited by the party leadership to attend some crucial closed-door meetings in the recent past.
Sources said the MLA was otherwise being kept away from the party’s Core group after being branded as a “bad bishop” during the stalemate over continuation of alliance with the rightwing Bharatiya Janta Party after the demise of Mufti Muhammad Sayeed on January 7.
However since May this year when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti invited him along with other party leaders for a dinner at Nehru Guesthouse, the MLA hopes of being given a second chance “soon”. But four months on, good news is still awaited.
His loyalists said, “Initially we were expecting good news in the month of Ramzan, and then after Eid, and now we expect it anytime in the coming days.” Sources, however said, there had come a twist in the story on July 28 when the PDP celebrated its foundation day at the party head office here.
Shockingly though flaunting to be close to the party leadership, this MLA was not given chair on the podium where other senior leaders were sitting.
Made to “eat a humble pie”, the MLA was asked to sit on the side where mostly party workers were sitting. He was even not given a chance to address the rally.
Amid his blow hot and blow cold relations with the party, some of his well-wishers had formally asked him to resign from the party and to announce the same through a press conference. “You have nothing to lose but you can gain public goodwill,” the MLA was told by his
friends. But the lawmaker didn’t respond to the advice, a hint that he was expecting “good news”.
But will he get a ministerial berth in the coming days? A senior PDP leader responded in negative pleading that this time the government priority was to restore law-and-order and not the distribution of ministerial portfolios. “The government is passing through a crucial phase when we are struggling to uphold the alliance. How can anyone expect to get ministerial berth?” he asked. When told that the lawmaker was believed to be expecting “good news
very soon”, he smiled to evoke poet Mirza Ghalib’s couplet: “Dil ko khush rakhne ko, Ghalib, yeh khayaal achcha hai!”
