Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 10: To thwart any attempt by militants to interrupt the 15 August functions, Security has been beefed up, and the authorities have sounded an alert across Kashmir.
Government sources told early TIMES that Police, paramilitary CRPF and army are maintaining close coordination to ensure smooth conduct of August 15 functions across Kashmir, especially the main official function to be held in Bakshi Stadium here, where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti would unfurl the tri-colour. "Extra vigil is being maintained across Kashmir in view of the current unrest and recent spurt in militant attacks," police said.
They said that there was no specific intelligence input about any terror strike in the city on Independence Day, but the security forces have been directed to remain vigilant and intensify checking to keep the militants at bay.
Police said that the security grid is also relying on modern gadgetry like CCTV cameras and human intelligence to ensure a peaceful Independence Day.
Similar arrangements have also been made at district headquarters where the function is scheduled to take place, the officials said.
The top police official preferring anonymity said that police is maintaining tightened vigil to prevent any possible militant attack. "All security arrangements are in place," the official said, however added that there are no specific threats or any inputs that suggest that militants are going to strike on August 15.
Police sources said that all roads leading to Baskhshi Stadium would be sealed on August 14evening and no vehicle will be allowed to play. "Sharp shooters would be placed atop buildings and houses adjacent the venue to ensure smooth function," they said.
Security forces have set up temporary barricades at several places in the city and elsewhere to check any movement of militants, they said.
