Career of non-Kashmiri students of NIT Srinagar at stake | Time to act | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 10: The non-Kashmiri students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, who only a couple of months ago were brutalized, punished, abused and taunted by radical elements in Kashmir for waving the national flag within the campus, are again in trouble. Almost of all of them (about 1700) have fled away from Srinagar and reached their home towns in different parts of the country. About 150 such students are at present in Jammu with some of them belonging to the region itself. Reports suggest that there are still a dozen of non-Kashmiri students, including a couple of girls students, who are there in Srinagar and their parents are a worried and frightened lot. The parents of the non-Kashmiri students of the NIT Srinagar are moving heaven and earth for two things. One, they want an environment in which they could complete their courses. The other is their demand that their wards must be provided with foolproof security. Some of the parents are mulling the option of iknocking at the doors of the Supreme Court of India. They believe that it would be an exercise in futility to depend on the authorities in Delhi and Srinagar as they failed them and their wards two months ago. "The authorities are not with us and our children; they are on the other side. The administration and the faculty are biased. They threaten our children with dire consequences. They do not spare even girl students. The environment on the campus is very hostile," told a mother of a student to this correspondent. Mother of another student told that "they would want the Union Human Resources Development Ministry to either set up NIT campus in Jammu or transfer their wards to other institutes in other states," and added that "we will not accept any other thing". Indeed, the plight of the non-Kashmiri students of the NIT Srinagar is miserable and their future is at stake. The authorities must intervene and accept one of their two demands - setting up of NIT campus in Jammu and adjustment in similar institutes located outside the state. |
