According to sources the sudden cause of collapse of 60 meter long and 30 meter wide siphon of a nallah passing over Kathua canal was due to the failure of concerned Department to repair it since 1971. The canal was constructed in 1960 and after 11 years of its construction it was repaired in 1971 and since then no renovation of the canal was done, sources added. The authorities also swung into action and started the restoration work on war footing basis to restore the power, water supply and telecommunication network.
Sources said besides the work has been also started for restoration of canal by reconstructing the damaged siphon. However it will take at least 20 days in restoring the water in the canal. Sources said that damage in the irrigation canal has added to the problems of the farmers who have already suffered huge losses in previous years due to vagaries of weather from time to time. Delay in restoration can invite the farmers wrath hence the authorities have started the restoration work on war footing basis. However the bad weather conditions can also hamper the restoration work and delay the speedy work has worried the authorities who are left with no alternative but to appeal people for cooperation.
