60 meters Kathua canal damages as siphon of nallah caves in | Irrigation, drinking water, power supply to remain affected | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: Sixty meters of Kathua canal collapsed today disrupting irrigation water supply to over 2000 acres of land in Kathua tehsil, water and power supply to a vast area besides hitting the communication link as road passing along the canal and telephone services to were also disrupted. According to sources the sudden cause of collapse of 60 meter long and 30 meter wide siphon of a nallah passing over Kathua canal was due to the failure of concerned Department to repair it since 1971. The canal was constructed in 1960 and after 11 years of its construction it was repaired in 1971 and since then no renovation of the canal was done, sources added. Sources said today the siphon of a nullah which passes over canal bed caved in near Gurudwara in Sawan Chak area of Ward No 17 damaging the canal and the connectivity road linking the area to DC Office Kathua and Railway Station besides hitting the irrigation water supply to a vast areas of Kathua tehsil and also disrupting power, water supply as well as communication link to the area as power lines, water supply pipes and telephone wires pass over the canal area. As panic gripped entire area, Deputy Commissioner Kathua,Ramesh Kumar, SE PHE and Irrigation, Executive engineers of Irrigation and R&B besides other civil and police officers visited the area and to avert any catastrophe the administration blocked the connectivity road for traffic immediately. The authorities also swung into action and started the restoration work on war footing basis to restore the power, water supply and telecommunication network. Sources said besides the work has been also started for restoration of canal by reconstructing the damaged siphon. However it will take at least 20 days in restoring the water in the canal. Sources said that damage in the irrigation canal has added to the problems of the farmers who have already suffered huge losses in previous years due to vagaries of weather from time to time. Delay in restoration can invite the farmers wrath hence the authorities have started the restoration work on war footing basis. However the bad weather conditions can also hamper the restoration work and delay the speedy work has worried the authorities who are left with no alternative but to appeal people for cooperation. |
