A Kashmiri crosses over to other side, 10 PoK residents arrive | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Sept 6: Only one Kashmiri crossed over to other side of the Line of Control (LoC), while 10 residents of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) arrived here to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their relatives separated in 1947 due to partition. As many as 27 returnees also crossed the side at Kaman post, the last Indian military post on this side of the LoC in Uri sector in north Kashmir, official sources told UNI. They said due to unrest in the Kashmir Valley, the cross-LoC Karvan-e-Aman bus, operating between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, capital of PoK, is leaving early in the morning from here and late in the night from Kaman post for security reasons. Sources said a Kashmiri crossed over to POK yesterday to meet his relatives there. Similarly 21 PoK residents, who had arrived here in the previous buses, also returned to their homes after completing stay in Kashmir, where life remained crippled due to curfew, restrictions and strike since July 9, a day after Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander and two militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag, evoking massive protests across the valley. The PoK returnees included eight women and four children, they said, adding the bus had left from here at about 0530 hrs for security reasons to avoid any demonstrations or stone pelting on way yesterday. Sources said ten PoK residents, including two women and as many children, arrived at Kaman post after crossing the Aman Setu, peace bridge on foot, to celebrate the Eid festival with their relatives separated due to partition. They said that only six Kashmiris, including two women who had gone to POK, also returned to their homes after completing stay across the LoC. However, fresh PoK guests and Kashmiri returnees had to wait at Uri before starting journey towards their respective destinations late in the night to avoid any untoward incident because of strike called by separatists against the killing of 74 civilians and demanding right to self determination. The bus service was suspended on July 4, because of Eid-ul-Fitr festival. The cross-LoC bus was suspended on July 11 and 18 for security reasons after the death of Hizbul commander. Later, it was decided to ply bus service early in the morning from here and late in the night from Kaman post to avoid any violence. The bus service, introduced on April 7, 2005, has helped thousands of families divided due to partition in 1947 to meet each other after India and Pakistan agreed to allow travel of state subjects from both sides on travel permits instead of international passport. However, people are allowed to travel only after their names are cleared from intelligence agencies from both sides. |
