Victimized girls, whistle-blower say police under pressure; cops agree | Despite public outrage over PM scholarship scam, Govt averts probe | | AB Sharma Early Times Report RAJOURI, Sept 6: Despite massive public outrage over alleged duping of poor girls here under a scholarship program launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government is reluctant to order an inquiry. Sources in police said some politicians from the ruling BJP have been pressurizing the department not to hold any inquiry come what may, or else "heads will roll." One of the main complainants Sham Lal, a panch at the of Block Laite Panchayat, who has been the whistle-blower in the multi-crore scam said he shot letters to senior officials of the rank of DIG and SP seeking inquiry, but that the concerned even failed to file an FIR. As already reported by Early Times, the multi-crore scam surfaced in Rajouri district where some poor girls have been duped of scholarship money worth over Rs 2.5 crores supposed to be given to them under a special scheme. While genuine scholarship of Rs 10,000 each, which was to be availed by the poor girls, was grabbed by a business group which provided them training for cutting and tailoring, the girls have been threatened to keep their mouth shut or "face consequences." Officials said as a part of Pradhan Mantri Koshal Vikas Yojna, unemployed matriculate girls were taught stitching and tailoring, and on the completion of the course were scheduled to get Rs 10,000 each. The beneficiaries included girls from Sundarbani, Kalakote, Taryath, Dhramshal, and Pouni Tehsils of Rajauri district here. After completion of training program, the girls received money in their bank account but the money was grabbed by a group of people running the training center. As per the victims, the institute owner had opened their bank accounts and asked them to sign blank cheques which he kept with himself. When the government deposited the money in account of the girls, the training institute owner withdrew the same illegally. When girls received SMS of cash withdrawal, they raised an alarm while it turned out to be multi-crore scam as hundreds of girls had been duped. Though the poor girls and the Panch who acted as whistle-blower raised a hue and cry, there was no response from police. Talking to Early Times a senior police official said, "We are under political pressure not to register any case as it will open can of worms as many senior politicians from ruling government seem to be involved in the case." "It is better if the complainants contact IGP Jammu," the official said pleading anonymity. Despite repeated attempts, the IGP Jammu could not be contacted for comments. |
